This is illuminating. First, water is something like 700+ times denser than air. Second, airfoils are over rated. As a kid I was able to go fast over the water with a skim board. No foil at all, and it just balances your weight by induced movement pressure on the bottom of the board, no water needed over the top (so the wing analogy doesn't apply.) This is basically what you get with a sailing surfboard. Foils are cool in choppy water if you can ride through the chop, but in smooth water, you don't want anything over the top of the board, just on the bottom. As you speed up, you just want to reduce the area of the board in contact with the water (which is possible because you need less contact area when you are going faster.) You want the touching surface to be really low drag. After that you need to minimize the air drag from the surfer and sail or wing in the air. BTW, it may be possible to reduce the structural size of the hydrofoils and post using certain graphene doped composites.

Where I surf we have lots of gusty wind conditions. Just love to use my slalom sails over the non-camber free rides I had before, due to the lulls. It really feels like you just get carried through the lulls where before the sails would loose their shape and you get hit a bit hard when the gust comes back and they don’t carry in the lulls. So big advantage if you ask me, for camber sails😊

I guess I'm really your target group here. Blasting with slalom withouth sometimes thinking...hey...could I change the set-up. Last time out I could see the fron of my board splashing to waves and thought ok....but then put the mastfoot 2 cm backwards for the fun of it and the effect was exactly like you describe. The board was immensely balanced riding on top of the water effortlessly even overpowered. This video, like you say, is like holy grail for those riders with sticky boards when powered. So off to trimming for me as well. Great stuff! Thanks a million for Revealing the secrets of speed.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I am about to buy a Starboard Formula 160 (wood, maybe 2005) with reinforced deep tuttle and I saw a 2nd add for a Fanatic Flow H9 in my area. Any advice ? What is your formula ? (I am used to regular windsurf with a Free Formula 138). Thanks.

You wind surfed in the wrong position, with large boards (don't mind if inflatable or not) feet toward the stern and shoulder toward the bow, mast arm stretched out, hold the boom not too close to the mast, rather move the mast hand closer to the wider area of the boom

that spot should be close to any water sport and fishernet, it is very easy to find dead caretta caretta tarturles on the beach of Agios Ioannis and the locals hide that tarturle as soon as they find them

Nice footage. I am going to Vasiliki soon. I have never been before. I have a 3/2 long leg, short arm wetsuit. Do you think this will be too warm? I don't have anything else only a winter wetsuit which I'm definitely not bringing.

I've been to Vassiliki many times it's always hit and miss and very overrated. There are much nicer places in Greece, Rhodes, Karpathos, Naxos, where the wind blows constantly literally like a fan.

I have been to ‘Vass’ a few times and it is totally unpredictable. Great for sleeping late as the wind rarely appears until after lunch. We used to say 2 o’clock in the afternoon is when Eric (as the wind is called) turns on and it usually stays until early evening and then switches off. I have sailed in very strong winds there and on one occasion we had Force 10 and all the boards, sails, furniture and everything was blown away towards the town!

My parents sailed the original Windsurfer and we upgraded to Equipes, Malibu's, Explosions, Eruptions, Edges, Tiga boards, F2 boards, went to the Gorge every summer of the 90's and now I'm foiling a Slingshot Dialer in addition to having lots of free ride gear and a few beginner boards for my kids (START, Viper).

I taught my friend to sail on my Viper 80. He learned on a 4.5, and moved up to a 6.7. After a year with it, he moved up to my 152 liter Bic Techno that he sails with my 6.0 and 6.7.

Welcome back!I am a local windsurfer basically at Koronisia Amvrakikos and also Ioanian coast and Lefkas.Sailing between caretas is very common to me and they usually dive a liitle and both avoid the crash...But end of last October I had a serious crash catapult being on slalom gear and 40cm fin which has been filmed on my gopro.I was very lucky to survive from the shock with small injuries and got back to shore.As for the careta I beleive she survived too because I saw only a crack on the lowerr part of the G10 fin...
